A garnet the colour of fine emerald
Tsavorite is green grossular garnet, coloured by vanadium and chromium. It was found in north-east Tanzania in 1967 and then across the border near Tsavo in Kenya, which gave it its name.
Its green rivals fine emerald, with more brilliance and almost no inclusions, and it is very rarely treated. The constraint is size: most rough yields stones under two carats, and clean, saturated tsavorite above three carats is genuinely rare.
