ALEXANDRITE

Green by day, red by night

Alexandrite is a chrysoberyl that changes colour: green to bluish green in daylight, red to purplish red under warm light. Chromium causes it, and the strength of that change decides the price.

It was found in the Ural Mountains in the 1830s and named after the future Tsar Alexander II. Brazil, Sri Lanka, India and East Africa produce today, but a strong, clean change in a stone above two carats remains one of the rarest things in the trade.
