PADPARADSCHA

The lotus sapphire

Padparadscha is a sapphire in a delicate blend of pink and orange. The name comes from the Sinhalese for the colour of the lotus blossom, and Sri Lanka is its classic source, with Madagascar and Tanzania producing too.

Laboratories define the colour range narrowly, and stones just outside it are sold as pink or orange sapphire. Diffusion-treated imitations of the colour once flooded the trade; CGEMX refuses diffusion at both venues, and a top laboratory report is the only proof that matters.
